Roblox, once known primarily as a platform for young players to engage in role-playing games, has evolved into a hub for a variety of virtual experiences, including music festivals and political events. Now, it might also become a place to find romance.
This week, Roblox CEO David Baszucki shared his vision of introducing romance to the platform. In a podcast interview, he explained, “I think a lot of people who are too afraid to go on a real-life date might find it easier to have a virtual date to start, and then if they connect, move to the physical world.”
David first hinted at this concept during the 2023 Roblox Developers Conference, proposing immersive dating experiences that could lead to real-world relationships. He highlighted the “loneliness epidemic” as a driving force, noting that 73% of Gen Z reports feelings of loneliness, making efforts to foster real connections increasingly important.
However, this virtual dating feature isn’t available yet. At present, romantic interactions between players are prohibited by Roblox Community Standards, largely due to the young demographic (39% under age 13). The proposed dating service would be exclusively for ID-verified users aged 21 and over.
Initially, the idea of tackling loneliness through a digital dating platform seemed contradictory, as VR dating appears to be a response to the exhaustion with traditional dating apps. Yet, the concept of being able to date virtually on Roblox has its appeal. As David pointed out, virtual dating can ease the anxiety of first dates. In today’s hesitant social climate, where nearly half of young men aged 18-25 have never asked someone out in person, the metaverse might foster connections that wouldn’t happen otherwise.
Preparing for a virtual date also requires less effort. There’s no need for physical grooming when your avatar can look great for you. This could shift the focus to meaningful conversations, similar to the “pod-dating” phase on shows like Love Is Blind, where the emphasis is on getting to know each other without real-world distractions. For these reasons, I’m ready to embrace Roblox dating with the same seriousness I’d give a date arranged through a traditional app.
